Criticism of the Administration’s Middle East policy was today voiced by Democratic Senators on the Senate floor. Senators Mansfield Douglas, and Humphrey as sailed the Administration for failing to correct the military imbalance between Israel and the Arab states. They urged the Eisenhower Administration to sell Israel arms.
Senator Humphrey termed “nonsense” State Department reasoning that if the U. S. sold Israel arms the Soviet might sell more to the Arabs. Senator Douglas charged that the State Department has given the American people “statements of less than the truth” about U. S. action in the Middle East. Senator Mansfield said the State Department was “not achieving anything” by telling our Allies that the U. S. does not oppose their shipping planes to Israel while this country refuses Israel military aid. This, he declared, was an uncourageous approach to the Middle East question.
