Discussions held in Cairo between U.S. Ambassador Jefferson Caffrey and the Egyptian Foreign Minister may result in relaxation of restrictions imposed by the Egyptian Government against tankers passing through the Suez Canal in a northerly direction, it was indicated here today. The restrictions, however, will be stringently maintained for Israel-bound shipping, it was emphasized.
The American Merchant Marine Institute, which earlier had registered a complaint against the Suez Canal regulations with the Egyptian Ambassador in Washington and with the State Department, was informed today that the restrictions were instituted to “prevent the shipment of arms and war materiel to Israel.” Egyptian Ambassador Rahim in Washington was reported to have told Institute officials that he saw no reason why vessels not destined for Israel should be so regulated.
