U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright called on Egypt to follow Israel’s lead and offer to take a cut in its $2.1 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid. Albright also welcomed Israel’s recent proposal for the United States to gradually reduce foreign aid payments during the next 10 to 12 years. In testimony to a House Appropriations subcommittee, Albright voiced support for the plan, which would end the current $1.2 billion in annual U.S. economic support while increasing each year’s U.S. military aid to Israel from $1.8 billion to $2.4 billion.
