U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said he gave President Hafez Assad a message from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing his desire to resume peace talks with Syria. Specter, on a visit to Damascus, told a news conference that he also conveyed to the Syrian leader President Clinton’s readiness to become involved in helping revive the talks, which have been suspended since 1996.
