U.S. Sen. Trent Lott said NATO has concerns about corruption and religious intolerance in countries looking to join the group. The Senate minority leader gave 10 former Eastern Bloc countries a strong endorsement in their bid for NATO at a meeting in Latvia last Friday, but he also warned that the alliance would not let military issues outstrip the need to deal with problems like corruption, anti-Semitism and freedom of the press that persist in the former communist countries.
