The first of three groups of more than 100 social workers, high school students and Jewish educators from 20 states left from the International Airport here today for a summer study tour in Israel. The group consists of 26 social workers. A group of 50 students enrolled in Hebrew classes in American high schools will leave on June 29. A third group, consisting of 36 Hebrew educators, will leave on July 3. The tours are part of the non-profit, educational program conducted by the Jewish Agency’s Department of Education and Culture.
The social workers’ tour is a new project inaugurated this summer for the purpose of acquainting Americans in the field with social welfare work in Israel, and to bring them into contact with their professional counterparts in that country. The program, conducted entirely in English, includes lectures by leaders of social welfare agencies in Israel and by members of the Hebrew University faculty, the Israel Government and the Jewish Agency who are directly concerned with social problems and the integration of immigrants. This tour has an enrollment of 26 case workers and directors of Jewish community centers and welfare groups, and was arranged in cooperation with the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service.
The 50 high school students from six Eastern and mid-Western cities are recipients of scholarships awarded by their communities. The tour is conducted by the Jewish Agency in cooperation with the Jewish Education Committee, the Hebrew Culture Service Committee for High Schools and Colleges and the Boards of Education of New York City, Chicago, Boston, Buffalo, New Haven and Providence.
