Deputy Secretary of Defense William P. Clements, Jr., has assured an American Jewish organization that in the present Middle East negotiations the United States is “moving on a consistent line that continues American support for the survival of Israel.” He made his statement to the 80th annual convention of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. in Las Vegas where Judge Paul Ribner of Philadelphia was re-elected national commander.
Clements suggested that “organizations representing all sides” of the Arab-Israeli dispute did not “always fully comprehend” what the U.S. was trying to achieve in the Mideast, “We welcome your questions of our actions,” he said. “We hope you will not question the dedication of our commitment to a strong and viable State of Israel for peace in the Middle East.” Clements has been accused of having sought to delay sufficient U.S. military aid to Israel during the 1973 war.
