SECRETARY OF STATE CORDELL HULL, IN A TELEGRAM TO GEORGE BACKER, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC AGENCY YESTERDAY, DECLARED THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ENDEAVOR TO ASSIST IN OBTAINING PERMISSION FOR THE REOPENING OF THE J.T.A. BUREAU IN BERLIN, WHICH WAS CLOSED LAST WEDNESDAY BY THE GESTAPO (GERMAN STATE SECRET POLICE).
MR. HULL’S TELEGRAM WAS IN REPLY TO TELEGRAMS SENT BY MR. BACKER TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND TO GEORGE S. MESSERSMITH, ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE, FRIDAY REQUESTING THAT THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN BERLIN BE ADVISED TO ASSIST IN OBTAINING PERMISSION FOR THE J.T.A. BUREAU TO REOPEN.
MR. HULL’S TELEGRAM FOLLOWS: “THE AGENCIES OF THIS GOVERNMENT WILL RENDER EVERY APPROPRIATE ASSISTANCE TO YOUR BERLIN BUREAU IN CONNECTION WITH THE CLOSING OF THAT OFFICE BY THE GERMAN AUTHORITIES AND IN ENDEAVORING TO ASSIST IN OBTAINING PERMISSION FOR IT TO REOPEN. HOWEVER, IN VIEW OF YOUR TELEGRAMS OF NOVEMBER 12, 1937, TO ME AND MR. MESSERSMITH, I AM INFORMING OUR OFFICIALS IN BERLIN BY CABLE OF THE CONTENTS OF YOUR MESSAGE, AND UPON THE RECEIPT OF FURTHER INFORMATION I SHALL COMMUNICATE WITH YOU PROMPTLY.”
