A nationwide total of $12,000,000 in war bonds sold by B’nai B’rith and through B’nai B’rith-sponsored campaigns was hailed as “a magnificent contribution to the war effort and an inspiring and pace-setting example of patriotism in action” by William C. Fitzgibbon, personal representative of Secretary of the Treasury Morganthau, addressing the 90th annual convention of B’nai B’rith’s District Grand Lodge No. 2 here.
More than 1,000 delegates and guests attended the four-day District convention and the 9th annual convention of Women’s Grand Lodge No. 2 as spokesmen for 25,000 B’nai B’rith men and women in the eight-state area of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
Mr. Fitzgibbon paid special tribute to “the phenomenal achievement of the five B’nai B’rith lodges and auxiliaries in St. Louis which on May 19 sold $1,900,000 in war bonds in a single evening at a B’nai B’rith-sponsored and initiated ‘bid for freedom’ rally attended by 10,000 people.” I.W. Garek, Columbus attorney, was elected president of District 2, succeeding Max W. Soffer of St. Louis, who is going into the army.
