New York State Attorney General Jacob K. Javits tonight called for a mutual defense agreement between the United States and Israel as essential to American interests in view of the troubled situation in the Near East. He spoke at a dinner of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, one of seven important industry and community functions at which $980,000 in pledges to the 1955 UJA drive were announced.
Mr. Javits noted that the U.S. Government has made no authoritative statement of policy concerning either inclusion of Israel in plans for the defense of the Near East or American aid to Israel in this connection. However, he said, our government apparently considers it indispensable to the security of the U.S. to take the risk of supplying arms to at least one Arab state, even though the Arab attitude is threatening.
