A delegation of Jewish leaders from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, headed by Rabbi Israel Miller, met this morning with the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, John Scali, and discussed with him the participation by the Palestine Liberation Organization in the forthcoming UN General Assembly debate and the U.S. position in that debate. The delegation received “assurances” from Scali that the United States would not remain “silent and will respond to misstatements” against Israel, Rabbi Miller told reporters after the meeting.
The delegation, which included Dr. William Korey, Yehuda Hellman and Malcolm Hoenlein, also discussed with Scali the attack Tuesday on the PLO office here. Rabbi Miller told reporters that the delegation members told Scali that they did not approve of the attack and. in fact, the demonstration sponsored next Monday is a protest against terror acts. Rabbi Miller said Scali expressed concern that the rally might lead to violence. The delegation, however, promised Scali that the demonstration would be peaceful.
