All major Zionist organizations in the U.S. today called on American Jews to “exercise their responsibilities in determining the policies and tasks” of the World Zionist Organization which will be reviewed at the forthcoming World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem to be held in the summer of 1950. Announcement of the call was made by Charles Ress, chairman of the U.S. Central Shekel and Election Board.
The traditional nationwide Shekel drive was launched in preparation for the 23rd World Zionist Congress with a proclamation signed by leaders of 12 Zionist organizations. The proclamation, noting that the “initial goal of Zionism”–the existence of the state of Israel–has been attained, called on American Jews to buy shekelim so that they “may be counted among those who will help Israel become in fact a home for every Jew who needs or wants to reestablish his life on Israel’s ancient soil.”
