The exclusion of Israel from current Middle East defense arrangements sponsored by the State Department was severely criticized here yesterday at a special conference of some 200 Zionist leaders in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, held under the sponsor ship of the Zionist Organization of America’s Commission on Israel and the Middle East.
The State Department’s “declaration of American impotence” as voiced by John D. Jernegan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, when he told the recent Washington meeting of major American Jewish organizations that in view of the present political situation in the Middle East Israel could not be included in defense plans, was denounced and rejected by Harry Torczynerm, chairman of the ZOA Commission. Rabbi Leon I. Feuer, chairman of the ZOA Department of Public Information, called upon the United Nations and the U.S. to take action to deal with the basic issues underlying the Gaza incident and other Israel-Arab tensions.
