Secretary-General U Thant today warmly congratulated Lt. Gen. Odd Bull of Norway and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) which he heads for their “excellent performance” “under fire” during three days of fierce Egyptian-Israeli artillery, mortar and small arms clashes across the Suez Canal.
Mr. Thant’s message said that observers at the Canal provided “effective reporting in very difficult and dangerous conditions. They have displayed great courage and resourcefulness in maintaining the observation operation under fire in spite of risk to themselves and heavy damage to installations, vehicles and equipment.”
