The Union of American Hebrew Congregations commended President Carter today for his public rebuttal of the Soviet charge that Anatoly Sharansky, a leading Soviet Jewish activist, is a CIA spy. The UAHC called upon its 740 Reform synagogues and 1.25 million members to launch a massive protest campaign. The UAHC’s board of trustees asked President Carter to persist in his condemnation of Soviet actions which are “the latest, and perhaps the most disturbing manifestation of a campaign being waged by the Soviet government against Jewish activists and others who demand a greater measure of freedom within the USSR.”
