The Pinchas Sapir National Campaign Achievement Awards have been established by the United Jewish Appeal to recognize those communities which have consistently exhibited excellence in their campaigns on behalf of the Jewish people at home, abroad and in Israel, Frank R. Lautenberg, UJA general chairman, announced today. The first year’s recipients of the Sapir Award will be: Minneapolis, Minn, for achievement by a large community; Tulsa, Okla., intermediate community; and Warren, Ohio, small community.
“These award winning communities.” Lautenberg said, “have demonstrated the qualities of giving which manifest themselves in leadership, in time and in hard work–qualities which reflect Pinchas Sapir’s own standards of achievements and perseverance on behalf of the people of Israel in his lifetime of devotion to the up building of Eretz Yisrael.”
These communities’ achievements, he added, “reflect a knowledge and an awareness of the needs, as well as the ability and determination to translate these needs into a campaign which becomes more than just a fund raising activity but a consciousness–an expression of Jewish commitment–which pervades the entire community.”
Sapir served as Israel, Minister of Commerce and Industry (1955-63), and for nearly 10 years as Minister of Finance (1963-68 and 1969-74). In 1974, he was appointed Chairman of the Jewish Agency. He died on Aug. 12, 1975.
