The United Jewish Appeal set a new peacetime record by collecting $367.6 million in cash in 1984, it was announced by UJA national chairman Alex Grass. He said that this amount is an increase of $41 million over the $326.6 million collected in 1983. In December alone, $101.2 million was collected, making it one of the most successful cash months in UJA history, Grass said.
Bernard Borine, UJA national cash chairman, said, “If we add up all the cash sent to the UJA by December 31 and received by January 7, we have a grand total of $385 million. We take great pride in all we have accomplished and we are looking ahead to doing even better in 1985.”
The total also includes $10.7 million for Project Renewal, the sweeping economic, social and cultural rehabilitation program created to improve the quality of life in Israel’s disadvantaged neighborhoods, and $5.4 million for the special capital projects of the Israel Education Fund.
