Participation in United Jewish Appeal missions to Israel this summer are expected to be up 45 percent over last summer, according to Naftali Lavie, head of UJA’s Israel operations.
Lavie, who is Israel’s former ambassador to the United Nations, ascribes the increase to the ending of the Persian Gulf War, and increased interest in seeing the absorption of Soviet and Ethiopian immigrants.
He said that some 2,220 people are expected on 20 missions this summer, compared with about 1,300 for the same number of missions in 1990.
