The 14th United Jewish Appeal Study Mission arrived here today in two planes for a survey of Israel’s humanitarian and security needs in connection with the UJA’s third annual Israel Emergency Fund drive. The group is headed by Edward Ginsberg, general chairman of the UJA, and Rabbi Herbert Friedman, executive vice-chairman.
At a press conference, the two national UJA leaders noted that the study mission program was greatly expanded this year. Its members are able to see for themselves conditions prevailing in Israel and to relay the facts to their home communities when they return. They said that the purpose of the Emergency Fund, the third since the June, 1967 Arab-Israeli war, was to relieve Israel of its financial burdens for health, education, settlement and social welfare needs so that it could concentrate whatever resources are necessary on security that is vital to Israel’s existence in the absence of peace with the Arab states.
