The first conference of Jewish teachers in the newlyestablished Jewish region in the Uk raine was held at Seide Menucha, the administrative centre of the region.
Reports submitted to the Conference showed that the school system in the region is very much under-developed. In the whole region there is only one school with a seven-year course. This school is in Seide Menucha. There are three four-year course schools, one each in Bobrovo, Kut and Lvovo, and six one-year course schools in the new settlements in the region. In all, 53% of the children of school age in the region are provided for in the school system. It is expected that within the course of the next year the number will be increased to 75%.
There is an acute lack of school buildings in the region. It was stated that it is essential to build during the present year at least six new schools, for which, however, the budget of the region is unable to provide funds. The colonists will, therefore, be required to contribute towards the cost of the new school bulldings.
The lack of schools in the new settlements is impeding the development of the Jewish colonization work, because many of the transmigrants refuse to bring their families with them, on the ground that there are no facilities for the education of their children.
The region also lacks other cultural institutions. In the whole region there are only two village clubs, fifteen reading-rooms and two libraries.
