The public Prosecutor has protested vigorously against the verdict of the Jury acquitting the Attaman Machno, his wife Halana Kusmina, his chief-of-staff Ivan Chmara, and his adjutant Jakub Deniszenka. In consequence, the prisoners are being detained in custody.
The indictment drawn up by the Public Prosecutor includes documents which prove that Machno was in communication with members of his band in the Ukraine and in the province of Eastern Galicia, now part of the Polish Republic, inciting them to stir up an Ukrainian revolt in Eastern Galicia, and to join with the Ukrainian peasants in Soviet Ukraine. It is alleged that Machno was in communication also with Soviet officials, which he indignantly denies In any event, the Polish authorities insist that Machno’s activity is inimical to the peaceful government of Eastern Galicia, and that the risings which he has been seeking to provoke in the province are likely to embroil Poland in new complications with the Soviets.
