B’nai B’rith today called on the United Nations to reject a motion by 34 Arab and East European states to suspend Israel from membership in UNESCO. David M. Blumberg, B’nai B’rith president, said that even consideration of the proposal “is in violation of the UNESCO constitution.”
“There is only one reference to suspension and expulsion in UNESCO’s constitution, which specifies that ouster from the UN itself will result in automatic loss of membership in UNESCO.” Blumberg said. “Since this has not happened, the question cannot properly be put to debate.”
