Israeli officials reported today that Israeli security units had uncovered during the past two weeks in the Gaza Strip a number of terrorist cells of the “Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine” and that some 40 suspected terrorists had been detained. Among those arrested, it was reported, was the commander of the “Front” in the Gaza Strip.
The investigation, which covered the entire Strip, found members in possession of weapons, explosives and other demolition devices, as well as an Arabic-language typewriter and a mimeograph machine. Several terrorist acts have been reported in the Gaza district in recent months, including an attack on an Israeli television team on a Gaza main street in which two team members were injured. Security sources called the uncovering of the cells an important achievement.
