The mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force between Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights was extended by the Security Council Friday evening for six months. The vote was 13 in favor. China and Iraq did not take part in the vote, as they did not in the vote extending the life of UN forces in the buffer zone in the Sinai desert. The UNDOF resolution was sponsored by Austria. Cameroon. Indonesia. Kenya, Mauritania and Peru.
Yosef Tekoah. the Israeli Ambassador to the UN, said the extension was a “positive development.” that UNDOF was an essential part of the Israeli-Syrian disengagement and that “proper observance” of the agreement required “the continued functioning” of UNDOF. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, speaking before the vote, said that on the basis of his Mideast trip last week he believed “all governments concerned are anxious to reach a settlement through negotiations.”
