Dr. Luther H. Evans, director general of the United Nations Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization, who just completed a four-day visit to Israel, today said he was “very impressed” by the enormous energy and effort being spent on the upbuilding of the new state.
At a press conference, Dr. Evans declared that one of the things that impressed him most was the fact that Israel was making such great strides in educating the new immigrants. He noted that more than half the population of the country has been in Israel less than five years and added that it changed his ideas of America as the “melting pot.”
He said Israel wanted few more experts from outside and that the UN could best help Israel by granting fellowships to help its specialists brush up on their fields by work abroad. He said that the progress made in educating Arab girls in Israel could very well be adapted by UNESCO for its work in Arab countries.
