Walter P. Reuther, president of the United Automobile Workers, CIO; Henry C. Turner, former chairman of the New York State Commission Against Discrimination and Charles Garside, present chairman of the Commission, and Joseph L. Bustard, Assistant Commissioner of Education of New Jersey today testified in favor of the Ives Bill to outlaw discrimination in employment, when the Senate Sub-Committee on Labor and Public Welfare resumed hearings on the FEPC measure.
Reuther told the sub-committee that discrimination has been on the upgrade since the end of the war and it would be accelerated by an economic crisis. He came out strongly in favor of legislation with provisions for enforcement. The other witnesses testified on the working of anti-discrimination agencies in their states, reporting that in the overwhelming majority of casos persuasion and consultations had been sufficient to resolve complaints.
