Delegates from hundreds of orthodox congregations in the United States gathered here today at the 44th national convention of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America being held at the Riverside Plaza Hotel. The meeting, which will run through tomorrow, will discuss the role of the synagogue in fortifying Judaism and in aiding the democracies in the war.
The best means of mobilizing orthodox Jewish youth and women to aid the various war activities will also be considered. The convention is being held in conjunction with the Union’s women’s branch, the Rabbinical Council of America, the National Union of Orthodox Jewish Youth and the Jewish university clubs. Former district attorney Thomas E. Dewey addressed the convention banquet tonight. City Council President Newbold Morris will greet the delegates at a luncheon tomorrow. Among those who also spoke at tonight’s banquet were Frank Weil, president of the Jewish Welfare Board and Judge Samuel Mellitz of Bridgeport, Conn.
