The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada urged President Nixon today to intervene on behalf of some 40 imprisoned Iraqi Jews, three of whom reportedly were sentenced to death and face imminent execution, A telegram to the President was signed by Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, president of the organization and Rabbi Meir Cohen, executive director. It said, “We earnestly appeal to you to make every necessary endeavor to save the innocent lives of three Jews in Iraq. We also ask you to intervene on behalf of all arrested Jews in that country on false and trumped up charges and on behalf of the Jewish population in Iraq and also in Syria and Egypt who are subjected to severe and extensive oppression and savage torture.”
