A day of fast and prayer was called for Wednesday, September 4, by the Agudath Harabonim, Union of Orthodox Rabbis, at a special meeting held yesterday.
A telegram was despatched to President Herbert Hoover, declaring:
“At a special conference of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of America the mournful reports of the unusual massacre instituted by the Arabs against the defenseless Jews were received and the following resolutions were adopted:
“Whereas, the Jews in Palestine were taken unawares in the attack of the Arabs and many are reported to have fallen as victims in the outragcous massacre, in the Rabbinical Academy of Hebron alone 45 students being reported killed and 50 wounded, of whom there are many American citizens, be it
“Resolved, that the Union of Orthodox Rabbis request the President of the United States, in the name of God and humanity, to use his good offices to check the Arab riots and bring salvation to the needy.” The telegram was signed by Rabbi L. Silver.
Cablegrams were sent to Rabbis Kook and Epstein in Jerusalem, expressing sympathy.
Cables were were also sent to Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodziensky of Vilna and to the Agudath Harabonim of Poland and Lithuania and to Chief Rabbi Hertz of London, informing them of the Taanich Zibur.
