The third annual Social Service Achievement Award offered by the Social Service Division of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York was presented today to the United Hias Service in recognition of its work in the speedy emergency resettlement of refugees from Hungary and Egypt.
The presentation was made at a luncheon of the division attended by 180 representatives of some 70 social welfare agencies and fund-raising organizations for such agencies, held at the Hotel Plaza. Henry L. McCarthy, New York City Commissioner of Welfare, who was one of the judges, made the presentation to Murray L. Gurfein, chairman of the United Hias executive committee, and James P. Rice, its executive director.
Other speakers included Dr. Joseph J, Schwartz, head of the Israel bond organization and a member of the panel of judges, and Philip Bernstein and Gottleib Hammer, the two chairmen of the Social Service Division.
