A special consultant is being sent to South America by the United Hias Service and his duties will embrace especially the development of methods to aid Brazilian Jews to integrate large masses of immigrants who have come to that country in recent years, it was announced here today. The consultant is Melvin S. Zaret, executive director of the Milwaukee Jewish Welfare Federation.
According to James P. Rice, executive director of United Hias Service, Mr. Zaret will spend the entire month of August in South America. While he will also visit Argentina and Peru, Mr. Zaret is scheduled to spend most of his time in Brazil. He will concentrate his work chiefly at Sao Paulo, the largest Jewish community in that country, Mr. Rice said.
Immigration to Brazil has, in recent years, increased the Jewish population in that country to between 125,000 and 150,000. United Hias, as the international Jewish migration agency, is working closely with the organized Jewish community in Brazil to help absorb the immigrants and, at the same time, to make possible a stronger Jewish community, United Hias officials here said.
Arrangements for Mr. Zaret to serve as a consultant for the United Hias were made by that agency in cooperation with the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, the national association of central Jewish community organizations throughout the United States and Canada.
