The sum of $20,000,000 will be sought throughout South America this year for Jewish needs in Israel and Europe, it was announced here today by Gedalia Zakiff-Zuchowitzki, director of the United Israeli campaign for South America, who just returned from Israel.
The central office for the South American campaign will be in Buenos Aires, he said. The drive will start in Uruguay this month. In Argentina it will start in April, while in Brazil, Chile and other countries it will be launched in May. A conference of representatives of Jewish communities in Latin American countries in connection with the drive is planned for May in Montevideo.
In Argentina Jewish businessmen and manufacturers will be asked to contribute two percent of their income to the campaign. Employees and workers will be requested to contribute their salaries for two weeks. The Ayuda organization of Argentina, which is the local fund-raising arm of the Joint Distribution Committee and the World Jewish Congress, will be a beneficiary of the United Campaign. It will receive about 6 percent of the total sum raised, while the remainder will be distributed among the Jewish National Fund, the Keren Hayesod and other Israeli institutions.
