Mutual Security Director Harold E. Stassen, who has just returned from his trip with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to the Middle East, will be one of the principal speakers at a two day emergency conference of the United Jewish Appeal opening in Washington Saturday. It will be attended by 750 Jewish community leaders from all parts of the country.
The conference will mark the first nationwide accounting and evaluation of results in the UJA’s current short-term special drive for $25,000,000 in cash. The conference will also assess plans for the raising of added sums this summer to provide for uninterrupted financing of urgent settlement, agricultural, development and rehabilitation programs in Israel and other parts of the world.
The conference high point will come at the final session Sunday afternoon with the presentation of community checks toward the special $25,000,000 cash goal. These checks, representing cash comes raised in 3,750 participating communities since the opening of the cash drive on May 1, are expected to total upwards of $15,000,000. The short-term drive for cash is part of the UJA’s year-long nationwide campaign.
Mr. Stassen will deliver his address on Saturday evening. Other principal speakers include Senator Herbert H. Lehman, Israel Ambassador Abba S Eban, Jewish Agency chairman Dr. Nahum Goldmann and Edward M. M. Warburg, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.
