The United Jewish Appeal will usher in the Fall and final phase of its 1956 nationwide campaign on Saturday evening immediately following the day-long observance of Yom Kippur, it was announced today by William Rosenwald, general chairman of the UJA.
Mr. Rosenwald announced at the same time that between that week and November 30, the UJA will seek $30,000,000 in cash to add to the cash sum of $44,000,000 it has realized since January 1 on its current efforts for support of refugee resettlement, welfare and rehabilitation programs in Israel and 23 other countries.
In making his announcement. Mr. Rosenwald termed the Appeal’s final 1956 effort “as fateful as any since we started raising funds 18 years ago.” He urged Jews in this country to keep in mind that “the most serious threats to Jewish life since the days of Hitler “face large Jewish communities in a number of overseas areas. “The very threat of annihilation has been levelled against the people of Israel, “he declared, “while the threat of isolation from the rest of Jewry grows larger and larger for Jews in certain other areas now being swept by revolutionary changes.” He called upon American Jews to support the UJA “up to the full measure of generosity,” asserting that this support can save hundreds of thousands of men, women and children.
