United Jewish Campaign in Greater New York Enters Its Last Million

The United Jewish Campaign of New York entered its final million of its quota of $6,000,000 when acting chairman David M. Bressler, at a rally of workers at its Hotel Biltmore headquarters announced the total reached was $5,250,000. The addition of $450,000 since Tuesday was due to the Bronx and Brooklyn Divisions. The Bronx group, headed by Commissioner Albert Goldman, raised $116,000 of its quota of $150,000 at the opening dinner at the Concourse Plaza Hotel.

The total already obtained toward New York’s quota is said to be the largest sum ever raised by the Jews of this city for foreign relief.

The Bankers’ and Brokers’ Division, headed by Carl Pforzheimer, leads with a total to date of $1,030,000. Leon Lauterstein, chairman of the Rockaway Division, reported $220,000, representing $120,000 over the original quota assigned to that district. The Real Estate Group, headed by Harry Goodstein, reported a total of $548,355.79.

Announcement was made by Mrs. Abram I. Elkus, chairman of the Women’s Division, that the total raised to date by the women in the campaign, was $427,899.

Among the non-Jewish gifts were a check for $1,000 from Cleveland H. Dodge, another $1,000 from Ogden Reid, and a third $1,000 from Cheney Bros. Judge George W. Olvany contributed $250.

Mr. Joe Leblang reported that Louis Mann had arranged for a baseball game between actors and managers to be played at the Polo Grounds for the benefit of the fund early in June.

Another attraction being arranged by the amusement division is a rodeo by a troop of 120 Don Cossacks who arrived here from Russia. According to the present schedule there will be two rodeos at the Madison Square Garden, the first on Sunday evening, May 30th, and the second on the following Sunday night. The entire proceeds will go to the fund.

Mr. Leblang also announced that one-third of the gate receipts of next Sunday’s soccer-match, in which the Hakoah, all-Jewish team will again play in New York, will be contributed to the fund.

At the meeting of the Theatrical Division’s executive committee. Bennie Leonard and Louis Mann were elected co-chairmen of the Committee on Athletics.

For the Jewish Theatrical Guild. Mr. Leblang reported that Sam Bernard and Fred Block had collected $9,000 for the fund.

The Motion Picture Branch of the Amusement Division will give a testimonial luncheon at the Astor Hotel next Monday to David A. Brown.

Mr. Bressler announced two ten thousand dollar gifts, one from Arthur M. Lamport and the other from Sigmund Lehman. Both donations were obtained by the Bankers Division.

A gift of $500 was received by Mr. Felix M. Warburg, Honorary Chairman, by cable from Mr. and Mrs. Israel Unterberg and also a gift of $1,000 from Arthur A. Harlow.

Through Dr. Stephen S. Wise one thousand dollars was obtained from Mrs. Henry Ottenberg, in memory of her late husband.

The Shirt Group, headed by Lester J. Alexander, reported $45,000.

Three anonymous donations were announced, one for $5,000 and two for $1,500 each, the latter two obtained through Louis Marshall.

The final rally of the campaign will be held at the Hotel Biltmore tomorrow evening.
