A decision to raise a special fund among the Jews of Great Britain in response to the appeal of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in Russia to the Jews of the Allied countries to contribute 1,000 tanks and 500 bombers to the Red Army was adopted here last night at the closing session of the conference of the United Jewish Committee to Aid Russia. The meeting was attended by 150 delegates representing all shades of opinion among British Jewry.
Messages from Soviet ambassador Ivan Maisky, Prof. Selig Brodetsky, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz and from the Anti-Fascist Jewish Committee in Kuibyshev were read to the delegates. Prof. Brodetsky’s message stressed that the foe of the Soviet, Union is the greatest enemy that the Jews have had in their thousands of years history. “As citizens of free Britain,” he stated, “as Jews who for centuries have curried the burden of human freedom and equality, we join our fellow Jews in Russia in support of the Soviet Union for the ultimate destruction of Nazism.” Chief Rabbi Hertz’s message expressed his “utmost sympathy” with the aims of the conference.
