Resolutions supporting the creation of “free ports” the United States to provide temporary, but immediate, haven for refugees, proclaiming a campaign for $100,000 to finance assistance for Rumanian Jews and inaugurating a nation-wide campaign to send relief kits to the impoverished Jews in Rumania, were adopted today by the 36th annual convention of the United Rumanian Jews of America at the Hotel Edison here.
Other resolutions adopted by the meeting urged the sending of a special Jewish representative to Rumania as soon as this is feasible, asked recognition by the United Nation Relief and Rehabilitation Administration of a central Jewish body to cooperate with the UNRRA in dealing with Jewish relief problems, voiced support of the activities of the War Refugee Board, and demanded abrogation of the British White Paper and the Nation of a Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine.
The convention, which was addressed by Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Congressman Manual Celler, also pledged support to the Allied war effort and promised cooperation with the United Jewish Appeal. Messages were received from President Roosevelt, Government Dswey, Senator Robert F. Wagner, Mayor La Guardia and others, The 400 delegates, presenting more than 50 Rumanian Jewish organizations in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago and San Francisco, re-elected Charles Sonnenreich, president and Wolfson, honorary president. Sol Rosman was re-named executive secretary.
