Berlin’s dormant University Extension Courses for Jewish education, closed down since Hitler’s advent to power in 1933, were reopened here with ceremonies conducted at West Berlin’s new Jewish Community House, on the site of the old Great Synagogue on Fasanenstrasse. Courses will be given in Jewish education for adults. The Extension University was one of Berlin Jewry’s most prominent activities here until it was closed down by the Nazis.
Dr. Adolf Leschnitzer, of New York, now teaching at the Free University here, was the principal speaker at tonight’s ceremonies, delivering an address on “Berlin: Scene of Jewish History.” Other speakers included Dr. Heinz Galinski, chairman of the West Berlin Jewish Community; and H. G. Sellenthin. Principal members of the Extension University’s faculty are Estrongo Nachama and Julius Stolberg.
