A University of California Study Center at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem has been approved by the University board of regents, it was reported here today.
Under the plan, according to Dr. William Allaway, director of the university’s Education Abroad program, 25 California University students will attend the Study Center in Jerusalem for their junior year and then return to the University here for their senior year. The program will be for 11 months. The first ten weeks will deal with language orientation. The Education Abroad program has 12 such Study Centers in overseas schools.
Dr. Joseph Kaplan, physicist and president of the Southern California chapter of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, cited the parallel interests of the two universities in farm and water studies, stemming from the similarity of such problems in the two countries. Prof. Kaplan, who is a member of the Hebrew University board of governors, said that the experience of living and studying in Israel would help the American students to a “better understanding of the social and political problems of the Middle East.”
