The University of Kovno will not yield to the demands of the extreme Nationalist student groups for the introduction of numerus clausus, the rector of the University, Professor Tchepinsky, has informed the Lithuanian Consul General in Palestine, G. Valkauskas.
Professor Tchepinsky’s statement was in reply to an inquiry addressed to him by the Lithuanian Consul General who referred to the recent reports of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency concerning the demands for a numerus clausus.
The rector of Kovno University acknowledged the existence of a movement for numerus clausus, but
asserted that it would have no effect whatsoever upon the Administration of the University.
The rector of the University stated that Jewish students at the University of Kovno number 1,116 and constitute 26% of the student body of 4,265, whereas the proportion of the Jewish population to the general population is only 7%.
All students are treated equally without any discrimination of any variety, Professor Tchepinsky asserted. “There is no place in our University for anti-Jewish clashes such as are prevalent in Universities in other lands,” Professor Tchepinsky emphasizes.
