A proposal that Jews be recognized by the UNRRA as one of the United Nations for relief purposes was made today officially by the Cuban representative to the UNRRA Council which is meeting here. It is not expected that the proposal will be adopted by the council.
A hearing on Jewish relief needs will be held this week at a special session of the council. The “Jewish case”will be presented by Louis H. Sobel on behalf of the Joint Distribution Committee and by Max Gottschalk for the American Jewish Committee.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the American Jewish Conference today presented rehabilitation recommendations for Jews to Assistant Secretary of State Dean Acheson, who is the American representative on the council. The delegation, which consisted of Dr. Alexander Kohanski of New York and Jane Evans of Cincinnati, urged assistance for Nazi victims who are not nationals of Allied countries and also asked that official Jewish observers be assigned to the UNRRA council and its various committees. They also urged that Palestine be made available for absorption of large numbers of displaced persons.
Arieh Tartakower, who is here as an unofficial observer for the World Jewish Congress, told a press conference that in view of the vast experience that Jewish relief groups have had, UNRRA should arrange for Jewish participation in its relief machinery.
