UNRRA Director-General LaGuardia today told a press conference that UNRRA would recommend that the “fixed number” of refugees that President Truman indicated he would ask Congress to admit to this country be raised from 50,000 to 150,000 additional refugees. “We could use 50,000 for housemaids in New York City alone,” he said.
Australian Ambassador J. O. Makin told a news conference today that his country wanted, in time, to take in many displaced persons. At present, he said, Australia is especially interested in taking children. He said his government was hoping that some of the refugees would be tradesmen who could help in the Australian housing crisis.
