Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, told reporters at the pier where he arrived from Europe today that Unscop’s report formed a basis for negotiations. He added that if the U.N. fails to solve the Palestine problem “it might just as well fold up.”
Dr. Israel Goldstein, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal of America, told a press conference that the Unscop majority report “as a whole represents an earnest effort to solve the Palestine problem” and has “lifted the spirit of Jews in Europe and Palestine.” He emphasized that should 150,000 Jewish immigrants be permitted to enter Palestine as recommended by the U.N. body, American Jewry would be called upon to assume greater responsibility.
Mrs. Moses P. Epstein, president of Hadassah, who arrived here by plane this morning, urged the United States Government to take the initiative at the U.N. Assembly to guarantee a Jewish state and large-scale immigration to Palestine.
