Sir Francis Montefiore presided at the ceremony of unveiling a wall tablet marking the site of the first London synagogue.
In this synagogue, the Jews worshiped openly after their re-admission to England by Cromwell in the seventeenth century. The synagogue was replaced in 1701 by the present Bevis Marks Synagogue.
Rabbi David Buenno de Mosquita offered a prayer in memory of the founders of the London Jewish community. He said the Jews of England will never fail to honor the memory of Oliver Crowell.
