Dozens of Palestinian rioters were reported wounded Tuesday during an upsurge of violence in the Gaza Strip.
The intensified rioting followed the expulsion Monday of eight Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank for anti-Israel and terrorist activities.
Unconfirmed reports Tuesday put the number of rioters wounded in violent clashes with Israeli troops at more than 40. Information on casualties in the territories has been more difficult to verify in recent weeks since the Israel Defense Force began closing trouble spots to the press.
The Israeli army clamped curfews Tuesday on the Jabalya, Nuseirat and Shati refugee camps in Gaza, in an effort to contain the rioting.
Widespread demonstrations and violence followed after Israel deported four Palestinian leaders from the West Bank at the beginning of January. Experts said Tuesday that Monday’s deportations are likely to ignite further disturbances in the territories.
The West Bank was relatively quiet Tuesday. The IDF said that in the village of Talluza, near Nablus, rioters set up roadblocks and trapped a bus carrying soldiers. The rioters threw stones injuring an IDF officer. Two Palestinians were injured from shots fired by the trapped soldiers.
