The Canadian Jewish Congress has urged the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. to broadcast programs in the Yiddish and Hebrew languages. Sol Kanee, national president of the Congress, in a letter to the Canadian Radio and Television Commission notes that the government Commission on Biculturalism and Bilingualism has recommended that the CBC “recognize the place of languages other than English and French in Canadian life.”
Supporting this recommendation, Kanee said that “If Canada is to accept the cultural pluralist concept its mass media should play a part in this.” He said it “is not possible to espouse multiculturalism and deny existence of languages which build these cultures. Yiddish and Hebrew have their role in Jewish song, poetry and prose, and to ignore languages is a distortion of cultural interpretation.”
