Urging more generous support of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the appointment of eight more regional rabbis, Ludwig Vogelstein, speaking before the Union’s executive board of which he is chairman, stated that there is “grave danger if we allow a Godless and irreligious generation to grow up. Do not permit it to be said of us that in our prosperity we forgot the blessing which our religion brought to our fathers when they settled in this country.”
ADOPTS $698,491.12 BUDGET
The executive board, which met here at the Hotel Ambassador Saturday and Sunday, adopted the report of the budget committee providing for a budget of $698,491.12 for 1930-31, which represents an increase of $19,446.50 over that of the past year.
Rabbi George Zepin, Cincinnati, secretary of the Union, reported that the organization now has 281 congregations with a membership of 61,662. He stated that the total income for the first six months of the present fiscal year, November 1,1929 to April 30, 1930, was $321,986.04 as against $248,502.10 for the corresponding period the previous year. Expenditures for the same six months were $311,651.64 as against $298,775.32 for the corresponding six months of the year before. For the second six months Rabbi Zepin estimated a probable income of $307,538.09 and probable expenditures of $331,389.17.
REVISED PRAYER BOOK QUESTION
The question of the proposed revision of the Union Prayer Book was submitted to the executive board by a joint committee consisting of members from the Union and the Central Conference of American Rabbis. Members included Roger W. Straus, New York, chairman; A. Leo Weil, Pittsburgh; Edward E. Mayer, Pittsburgh; Dr. F. H. Hirschland, New York, and M. L. Aaron of Pittsburgh for the Union. For the Central Conference of American Rabbis the members were: Dr. David Philipson of Cincinnati; Dr. Edward N. Calisch, Richmond, Va.; Dr. Abram Simon, Washington, D. C.; Dr. Samuel Schulman of New York and Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson of Pittsburgh.
A resolution felicitating its fellow member, Ben Altheimer on the occasion of his eightieth birthday was adopted by the board. Members of the various boards were reelected as follows:
