The property in Germany and Austria of deceased Jews and of Jewish communities which no longer exist should be placed in a central fund to finance the rehabilitation and resettlement of the displaced Jews now in Germany, Prof, Herman Gray, who has just returned from a mission to Europe on behalf of the American Jewish Committee, urged tonight. He spoke before the opening session of a two-day meeting of the Committee on Peace Problems of the American Jewish Committee, which is being held as a preliminary to the organization’s 39th annual conference, opening, Saturday night.
Prof. Gray, who visited many displaced persons camps, stressed that although conditions in the camps have improved, the basic solution of the problems of the displaced Jews is their immediate resettlement on a permanent basis outside of Germany. He said that the bitterness to be found among the camp residents, and the resentment among military authorities of the criticism levelled at their administration of the displaced persons centers, are a result of the fact that the Jews have been forced to take up semi-permanent residence in camps which were intended to be only transient centers. Judge Horace Stern of Philadelphia served as chairman of the opening meeting.
