The National Governing Council, under the chairmanship of President Daniel Fernandez Crespo, paid formal tribute to the memory of Israel’s late President Izhak Ben-Zvi, as official and non-official Uruguayans, non-Jewish and Jewish, joined in paying honor to the memory of Israel’s deceased Chief of State. Mr. Crespo, who eulogized Mr. Ben-Zvi, noted that he had met Israel’s late President personally.
Official tributes were also paid to Mr. Ben-Zvi’s memory in the Senate and in the Chamber of Deputies. All of the leading newspapers here featured articles expressing their condolences and emphasizing Mr. Ben-Zvi’s statesmanship and scholarship. The biggest of the memorial services, from the viewpoint of attendance, was held at Penarol Stadium here, where 8,000 persons gathered to pay homage to Mr. Ben-Zvi’s memory.
Religious services commemorating Mr. Ben-Zvi are scheduled to be held. Tuesday, at the end of the traditional seven days of mourning. Government representatives are scheduled to attend these rites, to be held in the Main Synagogue here.
