The Soviet Union today vetoed Transjordan’s application for membership in the United Nations. The negative vote was cast by Andrei Gromyko in the Security Council which must approve new members before the General Assembly votes upon them.
In explaining his vote, Gromyko declared that he doubted whether Transjordan was really independent and that the entire relationship between Britain and the Arab kingdom was “unclear” and represented a unilateral action on Britain’s part. The final vote was nine to one, with Poland abstaining.
